Benefits of corporate paint classes include:
Painting allows thought leaders and individuals to access different brain pathways. Creating art is a right-brain mode process that encourages divergent thinking and generating new solutions. In addition, painting is a relaxing activity that calms the mind.
For many of us, our day-to-day lives are busy with analyzing, calculating, debating and other executive control network functions. Doing an activity such as painting gives our analytical minds a break and re-charge simultaneously. This allows us to take on those tasks later with more clarity.
If we keep our brains in overcharge mode, they get to a point where they can’t function efficiently. Further, it is well established that painting can clear our heads and prepare us for more demanding mental tasks. Not only do painting classes invite us to access creative brain pathways, but they also calm our minds so that we are better suited to take on intense tasks at a later time. Therefore, team building painting classes create a unique opportunity for individuals to think outside the box.
Putting paint on canvas alone is an intimidating act. It might not seem like it, but my 20+ years of teaching have shown me how fearful and vulnerable many people feel when they are asked to create art. This compares to instances when executives feel a lack of confidence in making business decisions or enacting change. This class helps to promote the benefits of taking risks, thus building confidence and self-trust.
As students work on their paintings in my team-building classes, they encounter multiple opportunities for risk-taking because every artistic choice is 100% up to them. I do NOT teach students to copy another artwork as you find in many paint-and-sip classes. Instead, I teach students how to paint by explaining composition, color, and painting techniques, but then leave the design choices to them. Sometimes participants have to take creative risks, such as totally changing a part of the painting that is not working, but the more they take these risks, the more they develop inner-trust.
Not only does painting help individuals to develop a sense of inner-trust, but it also engenders trust with the participants in the room. Participants cannot hide the paintings they are doing–the product and the process of the artist is all there in the room. What I find is that participants naturally shift into support roles for each other. This is due to the shared experience of how challenging the painting process can be. When we feel encouraged and supported by colleagues, then we build more trust for them. This trust helps to strengthen relationships and form tighter bonds.
Relationships naturally get strengthened in group painting classes. Participants support, encourage and laugh with each other. At the end of the class, each person presents their painting and receives feedback and comments from the group. Each one goes home with a painting, which serves as a memory of the bonding experience. Not just that, but teams strengthen relationships in a fun and engaging way.
After the corporate team building class, participants feel a unique bond that carries over into their workplace. The painting they created serves as a memory of the bonding experience, and can be hung on their office wall.

I am an artist out of Santa Fe, New Mexico who has been painting for almost 30 years. I love to teach first-timers as well as experienced painters who need a creative reboot. My work has been displayed in several galleries around the country, and I have a Bachelor’s in Art History, a Master’s in Art Education, and had my work in a show juried by Judy Chicago. The idea of getting more people painting makes me light up as I want to inspire more people to express their creative selves and tap into a place of joy and calm.
